A Paul Pogba inspired Manchester United side saw the Red Devils return to winning ways at Everton as goals from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard secured a comfortable victory for the visitors at Goodison Park.
Despite ending 2017 on a low with three straight draws in the Premier League, the Red Devils put to bed any talk of a slump by kick starting the year on a winning note.
It was a cagey start to the game from both sides in the early part of the game but Maso Holgate came close to open the scoring for the visitors only for his header to go over the bar.
A brilliant clearance from Marcos Rojo prevented Oumar Niasse from getting a shot at goal against David De Gea, while Jordan Pickford on the other end could only put his tip to a decent cross from Martial before Cuco Martina made a huge clearance.
United upped the ante in the closing moments of the first half but decent efforts from both Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera from outside the box went wide.
However, the Red Devils looked far more dangerous after the break with Spanish maestro, Juan Mata going close to putting the visitors ahead with a lovely effort from outside the box but Jordan Pickford denied the Spaniard with a fantastic save.
United’s pressure eventually paid off in the 57th minute when Paul Pogba picked out Anthony Martial with a fine pass on the left from a swift counter attack, the Frenchman wasted no time as he curled the ball beyond Pickford’s reach.
Meanwhile, the Oumar Niasse tried to restore parity for the hosts with a fine header after going behind but David De Gea kept United in the game with a fine save.
Jesse Lingard capped off the Red Devils win in style after dribbling past Michael Keane to fire in a curling effort from 20 yards in the 81st minute.
